Derawar Fort

Rising dramatically from the sands of the Cholistan Desert, the Derawar Fort is one of Pakistan’s most iconic landmarks. Its 40 massive bastions, visible from miles away, once guarded the trade routes connecting India, Persia, and Central Asia. Built in the 9th century and later rebuilt by the Abbasi rulers, the fort symbolizes Bahawalpur’s strategic and royal importance. The site also houses ancient graves and royal tombs, adding a mystical charm to its vast desert surroundings.

Noor Mahal

Often called the “Palace of Light,” the Noor Mahal is a masterpiece of Italian and Mughal architectural fusion. Constructed in 1872 for Nawab Sadiq Muhammad Khan IV, it was used as a guest palace and symbol of royal elegance. With its white marble columns, chandeliers, and ornate interiors, Noor Mahal stands as a cultural jewel — now preserved as a heritage museum, open for visitors to experience the grandeur of Nawabi life.

Abbasi Mosque

Located near Derawar Fort, the Abbasi Mosque was commissioned by Nawab Bahawal Khan V in the mid-19th century. Built entirely of white marble, its architecture draws inspiration from Delhi’s Jama Masjid, featuring graceful domes, symmetrical minarets, and intricate carvings. The mosque’s pristine setting against the golden desert backdrop creates a breathtaking contrast, making it both a spiritual and architectural landmark.

Cholistan Desert Rally

Every year, the Cholistan Desert transforms into a vibrant cultural and motorsport arena during the Cholistan Jeep Rally. This thrilling event blends tradition and adventure, drawing participants and spectators from across Pakistan and abroad. Alongside the rally, visitors experience folk music, camel races, handicraft exhibitions, and desert camping, celebrating the enduring spirit of Cholistan’s nomadic culture.

Why Visit

Bahawalpur offers a rare combination of royal heritage, desert mystique, and cultural elegance. The city’s architecture, folk traditions, and warm hospitality make it an essential destination for travelers seeking to witness the regal soul of South Punjab.
