The Darkot Pass Trek is an unforgettable high-altitude journey through one of Pakistan’s wildest and most isolated mountain corridors. Starting in the upper Yarkhun Valley of Chitral, this challenging route takes you across the mighty Darkot Glacier and over the dramatic Darkot Pass (4,700m+), a natural gateway connecting Chitral to the upper Ghizer region in Gilgit-Baltistan. Along the way, you’ll pass through ancient Wakhi villages, cross roaring glacial rivers, traverse alpine pastures, and camp beneath the towering ice walls of the Hindu Kush.
This trek is designed for experienced hikers and mountaineers looking for raw, remote terrain, minimal crowds, and a deep immersion into the untamed wilderness of Northern Pakistan.

3 Hours Before Flight Time
Arrive at Islamabad International Airport. Meet your expedition leader and transfer to the hotel. In the afternoon, a full trek briefing and gear check will be conducted to ensure all participants are fully prepared.
Take a scenic full-day drive through the green valleys of Dir and over the Lowari Pass (or via tunnel), arriving in the cultural capital of Chitral. Evening at leisure to explore the bazaar or relax at the hotel.
Journey deep into the upper Yarkhun Valley via rough 4×4 tracks, passing riverside villages, traditional Wakhi homes, and terraced farmlands. Camp is set up near Lasht or Zundrangram — the last inhabited settlements before the trek begins.
Begin the trek along a glacial stream, surrounded by towering rock faces and scree slopes. Reach the base of the Darkot Glacier by evening and camp beneath the stars in a surreal alpine environment.
Continue climbing through boulder fields and lateral moraine as the landscape grows increasingly barren and wild. Establish base camp at the foot of the Darkot Glacier, where you’ll prepare for the pass crossing.
A crucial rest and acclimatization day. Participants can explore the nearby ridges, while guides provide crampon and glacier safety training in preparation for the crossing.
The most demanding day of the expedition. Begin early to ascend the icy slopes of the Darkot Glacier and cross the snow-covered Darkot Pass. Enjoy sweeping views of the entire Hindukush and Karakoram ranges before descending sharply into the Ghizer side, reaching the pastures of Chikar by evening.
Spare day for bad weather, altitude issues, or route challenges. Can also be used for further exploration or rest depending on group progress.
Follow glacial meltwater streams and rocky meadows to reach the remote settlement of Rawat, a small shepherd hamlet set in lush surroundings. Camp nearby or stay in basic local houses.
Descend into the fertile Darkot Valley, passing through walnut groves, wooden bridges, and terraced fields. Arrive at Darkot Village, one of the oldest Wakhi settlements in Gilgit-Baltistan. Enjoy a warm welcome and cultural interaction.
Travel by jeep along the Ghizer River, passing dramatic gorges and turquoise streams. Depending on time and road conditions, continue to either Gahkuch or directly to Gilgit, the regional capital.
Follow the famous KKH through deep valleys and over high bridges, arriving in Chilas — a transit town along the mighty Indus River.
Complete the overland loop via Babusar Pass (or Besham–Mansehra route if Babusar is closed), arriving in Islamabad by late afternoon.
Relax at the hotel or take an optional guided tour to the Faisal Mosque, Lok Virsa Museum, and Rawal Lake. A farewell dinner will be hosted in the evening.
Transfer to the airport for your international flight. The expedition officially ends — but the stories and memories from Darkot will stay with you forever.
